Chapter Seven
The next few days restored some of Everman's strained sanity. His injuries had been cleaned and wrapped. He had been given a week's vacation from guard duty, during which he was supposed to stay in bed and recover. For the first day of his new life, he had. But after that, Everman was often seen escorting Uriel throughout the castle or into the city. If not with Uriel, he could sometimes be seen talking intently with Gabriel, or pacing alone with his mind elsewhere. Very little did he actually visit his bed chambers in which he was supposed to be resting.
Everman counted these days separate from the days before he visited the Traveler's world. His eyes had been opened to so many new things, it was as if he were living in another world himself. This world had undergone such drastic changes since that one fateful day. Every day since his return, Everman went to the city walls and walked along them, as if he were on duty. He watched the land around, fearful to actually go beyond the walls because of the decaying conditions. He was disheartened to see his world dying.
The patches of dead forest had more than doubled in the last four days, claiming perhaps one quarter of the entire wilderness now. So many carcasses of animals were being found without physical injury or sign of disease. One moment they were walking forward, scrounging or hunting. The next instant, they fell over dead. Stories from the local farmers, whose crops were also dying, confirmed this. Everyone in the city was aware now they would have no crops to farm or game to hunt in as little as a passing of the moon.
Beyond the dead wildlife and vegetation, there were nightly tremors now. The ground shook, waking every soul in the city, as the soil twisted and deformed itself. Large hills, their sides as steep and rugged as cliffs, would shoot out of the ground at night, causing these tremors. It was as if the soil beneath their feet was at war, hostile and angry with the people who tread it daily. None of the townsfolk had had a decent rest in the last four days because of these violent tremors, which created its own set of problems. Peace and order grew more difficult to maintain, with more troops than ever patrolling the streets and breaking up fights. The dungeons were filling up with rioters.
Further complicating things, more sinkholes had appeared over the landscape, some of them dangerously close to the city. The sinkholes did not cause the same tremors as the rest of the geographic anomalies. Instead, they simply appeared, creating an ear-blasting shock wave of sound that could be heard miles and miles away. More of them appeared every day.
Everyone was running around scared and panicked. As he watched along the top of the wall, Everman noticed townsman turn to religion and church, claiming the end of the world was nigh. Everman doubted it would do any good, given what he had seen, but he remained silent.
